Weapons Of The Weak
James C. Scott’s Weapons of the Weak explores the subtle forms of everyday resistance practiced by poor peasants in Kedah, Malaysia. Through in-depth ethnographic research, Scott shows that the powerless do not always engage in open rebellion or large-scale protest. Instead, they rely on small, often unnoticed strategies such as feigned compliance, foot-dragging, gossip, petty theft, and quiet acts of sabotage. These actions function as “weapons” that allow marginalized groups to resist economic and social domination without incurring significant risk. Scott argues that such forms of resistance are crucial for understanding the real dynamics of power within society. The book highlights that power is not only shaped by overt political or physical force, but also by the ability of ordinary people to negotiate, subtly oppose, and preserve their dignity in everyday life.
